Shortcuts and Gestures#

Per-dock shortcut#

Open the selected dock's Behavior section, turn on Toggle with keyboard shortcut, and record a global shortcut. Shortcuts need at least one modifier key; Escape cancels recording and Delete clears the field. If the dock is turned off, the shortcut turns it on. Use Hide again after to hide the dock automatically 15 seconds, 30 seconds, one minute, or a custom time after the shortcut revealed it. ExtraDock reports if macOS refuses the key combination, often because another application already registered it, and keeps retrying.

Click behavior#

Choose what clicking an already-frontmost application's icon does in the dock's Behavior section: None, Minimize, Hide, or Cycle Windows.

Modifier-click and scroll gestures#

Turn on Enable click gestures and Enable scroll gestures in Settings → Behavior to run actions from ⌘-click, ⌥-click, ⌥⌘-click, ⇧-click, middle-click, or scrolling over a dock icon. Both are off by default; see App-Wide Behavior Settings for the actions and defaults.

To override the shared choices for one item, right-click it in the dock and open the Gestures submenu. Each combination offers Inherit default or a specific action; files and folders accept only Do nothing and Reveal in Finder. The submenu also offers Enable Click Gestures and Enable Scroll Gestures when the shared setting is off. Control-click always opens the context menu.

Window-control gestures and window cycling need Accessibility permission to work fully.

Edit Mode keys#

While a dock is in Edit Mode, Escape finishes editing; Return does too when no ExtraDock window is focused. See Dock Edit Mode.

Other keys#

  • ⌘, opens ExtraDock Settings from the menu bar menu.
  • ⌘F focuses the search field in the Widgets Library, and Return adds the widget when exactly one result matches.

macOS Shortcuts and Focus#

ExtraDock provides Show Dock, Hide Dock, Toggle Dock, and List Docks to the Shortcuts app, Spotlight, and Siri. The dock parameter lists enabled docks; you can also name a dock by typing it. Showing or hiding a dock this way is temporary and is not saved across relaunches; a hide stays in effect until something explicitly shows the dock again. The actions run without opening the app but fail until ExtraDock's license check has passed.

The Configure ExtraDock Focus filter has Docks to Show and Docks to Hide parameters. ExtraDock applies the shows first, then the hides, when the Focus turns on, re-applies the current Focus at launch, and does not restore anything when the Focus turns off.

If two docks have the same name, rename them so automations can target the intended dock reliably.
