Items#

The Manager's Items section controls the content and order of the selected dock.

Add content#

Click the + (Add to Dock) button in the toolbar and choose:

  • Items — Pick one or more applications, files, or folders.
  • Widgets — Open the searchable Widgets Library. Trash is added from the library as well. See Widgets in ExtraDock 5.
  • Native Dock Copy — Recreate your macOS Dock. It adds the folders and files pinned to the native Dock, its spacers, a Live Dock widget (which shows the pinned and running apps live), and Trash. In a dock that already has items, choose Add & Restyle to also match the dock's look to the macOS Dock, or Add Items Only. The command appears only when the native Dock's preferences can be read.
  • Monitor Dock — Add every system and device monitor at once: CPU Usage, Memory Usage, GPU Usage, Battery, IP Address, and Bluetooth Battery, skipping any the dock already has.

An empty dock shows the same choices as cards. You can also drop apps, files, and folders from Finder onto the Items list, or onto the dock itself while it is in Edit Mode. See Dock Edit Mode.

Reorder content#

Drag rows in the Items list to change their order. To rearrange items on the dock itself, right-click the dock and choose Edit Dock first; docks are locked otherwise.

Edit an item#

Each row has controls for its type: Item options and Custom icon for apps, files, and folders, Widget settings for widgets, and Trash settings for Trash.

Item Options lets you set a custom Name (leave it empty to use the item's own name) and Always show label, which draws the name under the icon in the dock. Files add Hide file extension. Folders add:

  • On click — Browse beside dock (the default) opens a browser popover next to the dock; Open in Finder opens the folder in the chosen app.
  • Folder browser — Layout (Grid, List, or Fan), Icon size, grid Columns and Show file names, Sort by (Name, Kind, or Date modified), Reverse order, Keep folders first, and Show hidden files. Drag files in or out of the browser to copy them; existing files are never replaced.
  • Open folder with — Choose App picks an application for this folder only; Use Finder returns to the app-wide default from Settings → Behavior.

Trash Options has Ask before emptying and Show item count, both on by default.

The custom icon menu offers Set from File, Import from URL, Choose from Library, and Clear Custom Icon. See Icon Library.

App menus#

Right-click an app in the dock for Open, Reveal in Finder, and, while the app is running, Hide and Quit. The Finder app adds New Finder Window, and folders add Open in New Window. For Chrome, Chrome Beta, Dev, and Canary, Brave, Microsoft Edge, Vivaldi, and Chromium, the menu includes New Window with Profile, which lists the browser's profiles by name and signed-in account and opens a new window in the one you choose. Guest and temporary profiles are not listed.

The menu also offers Change Icon, Revert to Original Icon when a custom icon is set, a Gestures submenu for per-item modifier-click and scroll overrides (see Shortcuts and Gestures), Edit Dock, and Remove from Dock. Apps shown by a Live Dock or Running Apps widget add Live Dock Settings and Hide from Live Dock. An ExtraDock submenu at the end of every item menu offers the dock-level commands.

Remove an item#

Click the minus button on a row in the Items list to remove it immediately. On the dock itself, choose Remove from Dock from the item's menu, which asks for confirmation, or use the minus badge while the dock is in Edit Mode. Removing an app, file, or folder from ExtraDock does not delete the original item from your Mac.

Unknown imported widgets remain represented safely rather than crashing the dock, but they cannot run until that widget type is available.
