Dock Edit Mode#
Docks are locked by default so nothing moves by accident. To rearrange a dock, remove items from it, or pin files from Finder, put the dock into Edit Mode first.
Start editing#
Right-click the dock or any item in it and choose Edit Dock. The same command appears in ExtraDock's menu bar menu for each enabled dock. A dock that is turned off cannot be edited until you turn it back on.
While a dock is being edited:
- The bar shows a dashed outline and every removable item shows a minus badge. Click it to remove the item. Apps, files, and folders are removed immediately; widgets ask for confirmation because their settings are lost.
- Drag items to reorder them, or drag an item off the dock to remove it. Clicking an item does not open it while you are editing. Apps shown by a Live Dock, Running Apps, or Space Awareness widget cannot be dragged.
- Drop apps, files, or folders from Finder to pin them where you drop them.
- The dock stays revealed, even if it normally auto-hides, until you finish.
Finish editing#
Click the floating Save button beside the dock, right-click and choose Done Editing, or press Escape. Return also finishes editing while no ExtraDock window has keyboard focus. Edits are applied as you make them, so there is nothing to undo when you finish; use the Manager's Items list if you want to review the result.
Locked docks#
A locked dock still accepts drops onto items that can use them: dropping a file on an app opens it with that app, dropping it on a folder moves it into that folder, and dropping it on Trash, a Shelf, or an App Stack sends it there. Dropping onto a gap, a plain file, or another item that cannot take files is refused, and ExtraDock shows the hint Right-click › Edit Dock to add items.
Choosing Remove from Dock from an item's menu on a locked dock asks for confirmation first. The Manager's Items section works whether or not a dock is in Edit Mode. Edit Mode changes only what the dock itself accepts.
